ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a Cheese Clerk to join our team. This position is responsible for preparing, stocking, and maintaining our cheese selection while helping customers find products that meet their preferences. The Cheese Clerk also helps maintain product freshness, attractive displays, and a clean, organized department.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Assist customers with cheese selections, product questions, and recommendations.
- Learn about different cheese varieties, flavors, and pairings to provide helpful product information.
- Cut, portion, weigh, wrap, price, and label cheese products according to company procedures.
- Stock, organize, and maintain attractive cheese displays and refrigerated cases.
- Monitor product quality, freshness, temperatures, and expiration dates.
- Rotate products using first-in, first-out (FIFO) practices.
- Assist with receiving deliveries, checking product quality, and properly storing merchandise.
- Report low inventory, damaged products, spoilage, or quality concerns to department management.
- Safely operate authorized equipment, including cheese knives, slicers, scales, and wrapping equipment.
- Clean and sanitize equipment, utensils, food preparation surfaces, and department areas.
- Follow food safety, sanitation, allergen-handling, and workplace safety procedures.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Previous grocery, specialty foods, deli, or customer service experience is a plus, but not required. Training will be provided.
- Interest in learning about cheese varieties, flavors, and food pairings.
- Friendly, professional attitude and strong customer service skills.
- Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and contribute to a team.
- Basic math skills for weighing, pricing, and labeling products.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain product quality and presentation.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced retail environment.
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices, or willingness to learn.
- Valid California Food Handler Card or ability to obtain one within the required timeframe, if applicable to assigned duties.
SCHEDULE & AVAILABILITY
Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires extended periods of standing and walking, frequent bending, reaching, twisting, squatting, grasping, pushing, and pulling.
Employees may be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and work in refrigerated or cold environments. The position also involves working around sharp utensils, food preparation equipment, wet surfaces, and cleaning products.
